Spelt is an ancient grain that has a high nutrient content
Spelt (Triticum spelta) is an ancient grain that has been grown for thousands of years. It has a delicious and nutty flavour and is higher in protein and many vitamins than wheat. As spelt has not been hybridized over the years like wheat, we believe it is easier to digest than wheat. Some individuals with allergies or intolerances to wheat are able to enjoy the benefits of spelt.
Unlike wheat, spelt comes off the combine with the hull still intact to the kernel. This hull protects the kernel from insects and infestations before harvest as well as in storage and transport. This hull is removed just prior to shipping to mills. Our farm is one of a few operations in Ontario equipped with special threshing equipment to remove the hull.
